The functioning of the Chronicle of Marcin Bielski in Ruthenian historical literature of sixteenth and seventeenth century from the intertextual perspective takes place on at least three levels. The fi rst one is the level of readers and Ruthenian historiographical’s reception of Polish text. Next level includes an analysis of Ruthenian translations of European history of the world, which indicate the growth of interest in culture and history of the West. The third phase of the intertextual communication between Polish and Ruthenian historiography is determined by using Chronicle as a hypertext (sometimes also in it’s original-language version). Next we move to essentially different level of intertextual use, which covers the above two. The usage of Polish Chronicle refers at the same time to the content of that work, as well as to the physical form of the book. Such treatment of Polish old print (I mean use of illustrations from the edition of 1564 years in the Ruthenian manuscripts) refers us to the ancient tradition of making palimpsests and encourages refl ection
on the relation of the old Rusyns to print.
