Europe, including Poland, is ageing at an alarming rate. The decades to come will see above-average dynamics of population ageing paralleled with epidemiological changes, primarily including an increased incidence of chronic diseases. Consequently, an ageing population will
increasingly affect the demand and supply of the healthcare system. This article discusses the demographic factors that determine healthcare expenditure in the light of available research together with their potential impact on the public spending on healthcare in the coming decades.
