Il rosario interrotto : L’irruzione del mondo esterno nelle stanze della preghiera in Sicilia: Verga, De Roberto, Tomasi di Lampedusa

Immagine ricorrente nel romanzo e nella novellistica di ambientazione siciliana, tra Otto e Novecento, la recita del rosario assume negli scrittori qui proposti una connotazione peculiare, di ordine stilistico, retorico e propriamente narratologico. In Verga, De Roberto e Tomasi di Lampedusa, infatti, la preghiera predispone spesso all’inserzione repentina di elementi mondani nell’intreccio del racconto; e anzi la sua struttura – iterativa, monotona, litanica – giunge ad essere utilizzata come palinsesto per la rappresentazione di gesti, eventi e sentimenti in chiave antifrastica e deformante rispetto al testo della preghiera stessa. Attraverso i riscontri testuali ritenuti più significativi, il contributo intende offrire una non esaustiva ma rappresentativa esemplificazione delle argomentazioni proposte.

A recurring image in novels and novellas of Sicilian setting, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the recitation of the rosary takes on a peculiar connotation in the writers proposed here, of a stylistic, rhetorical, and properly narratological nature. In Verga, De Roberto and Tomasi di Lampedusa, in fact, prayer often predisposes to the sudden insertion of worldly elements in the plot of the story; and indeed, its structure – iterative, monotonous, litanic – comes to be used as a palimpsest for the representation of gestures, events and feelings in an antiphrastic and deforming key with respect to the text of the prayer itself. Through the textual findings considered most significant, the contribution intends to offer a nonexhaustive but representative exemplification of the arguments proposed.
