Czy piękno zbawi świat? : lekcja z ks. Józefa Tischnera

Punktem wyjścia do rozważań na temat relacji piękna do zbawienia jest według Tischnera pytanie o możliwość zbawienia w mitologii greckiej. Autor stwierdza, że zgodnie z ówczesnym myśleniem religijnym życie człowieka nie podlega zbawieniu, ponieważ fatum jest nieuchronne. Zbawienie zostaje zastąpione przez kategorię katharsis, czyli oczyszczenie, które dokonuje się poprzez litość i trwogę, fascinosum i tremendum wywoływane w czasie oglądania tragedii. Zgodnie z koncepcją Rudolfa Otto, te same uczucia wywołuje spotkanie z sacrum. W tym znaczeniu piękno „zbawia”, ale jest to wyłącznie przemiana tego, co tragiczne, w to, co estetyczne. W chrześcijaństwie zbawienie, które dokonało się w Chrystusie, unieważnia tragiczność fatum, ponieważ przynosi nadzieję. Nie mogąc zbawić, piękno spełnia jedynie rolę pomocniczą. Wobec tajemnicy krzyża piękno pozostaje ambiwalentne. Estetyzacja cierpienia Chrystusa pozwala na zbliżenie się do tego, co samo w sobie jest okrucieństwem, a jednocześnie niesie w sobie niebezpieczeństwo dystansu, jaki odczuwamy, oglądając krzyż w muzeum.

According to Tischner, the starting point for considering the relationship between beauty and salvation is the question of the possibility of salvation in Greek mythology. The author concludes that according to the religious thinking of the time, human life is not subject to salvation since fate (fatum) is inevitable. Salvation is thus replaced by the category of catharsis (katharsis), or purification, which is accomplished through commiseration and trepidation, fascinosum and tremendum evoked when watching a tragedy. According to Rudolf Otto’s concept, the same feelings are evoked by an encounter with the sacred. In this sense, beauty “saves”, but only as a transformation of the tragic into the aesthetic. In Christianity, the salvation that happened in Christ overrules the tragicness of fate because it brings hope. Unable to save, beauty plays solely a supporting role. In the face of the mystery of the cross, beauty remains ambivalent. The aestheticization of Christ’s suffering allows us to get closer to what is cruelty as such, while at the same time it carries the danger of distancing ourselves from it when viewing the cross in a museum.
